Version 1.1 — Effective August 25, 2026. Supersedes Version 1.0 (July 15, 2026). The Course is offered by Ryan Hanau, Inc. ("RHI"). These Course Terms govern the purchase and use of The UX Research Course at uxrcourse.com (the "Course"). By purchasing the Course, by accepting an invitation to a no-cost pilot cohort, or by signing in to access the Course, you agree to these terms.
1. Access and License
Upon payment, or upon RHI's confirmation of your admission to a pilot cohort, RHI grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access the Course materials for your individual education. Access is tied to the email address provided at checkout and is limited to one individual per purchase. You may not share, resell, sublicense, record, redistribute, or publicly post Course materials, in whole or in part. "Lifetime access" means for as long as RHI offers the Course, and in any event not less than twelve (12) months from purchase; RHI will provide reasonable notice before any discontinuation.
2. Fees and Payment
Course fees are one-time charges processed by Stripe, Inc. RHI does not receive or store card numbers. Posted prices may change at any time; changes do not affect completed purchases. Applicable taxes are calculated at checkout. This Section does not apply to Pilot Participants, who are not charged a fee. See Section 10.
3. Refunds
The Course tier carries a fourteen (14) day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase. Cohort and Coaching tiers are refundable on the same basis until your first live session is attended, after which fees are nonrefundable. Refund requests must be sent from your purchase email to the contact address in Section 9. This guarantee applies notwithstanding any “AS IS” or no-refund provision in the RHI Website Terms of Use, which does not apply to the Course. This Section does not apply to Pilot Participants. No fee is paid, so no refund arises. See Section 10.
4. Live Sessions
Cohort and Coaching tiers include live sessions scheduled through RHI's booking system. Sessions may be rescheduled with at least twenty-four (24) hours' notice; missed sessions without notice are forfeited. Included sessions expire twelve (12) months after purchase.
5. Intellectual Property
Course materials are and remain the exclusive property of RHI and are protected by copyright. Work product you create in completing the Course — including your capstone research project — belongs to you.
6. Educational Disclaimer
The Course is provided for educational purposes. RHI makes no representation or warranty regarding employment, career, or business outcomes. The curriculum was developed and previously taught by Ryan Hanau at UC Berkeley Extension; the Course is offered independently and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the University of California. Referenced texts, including Understanding Your Users (Baxter, Courage & Caine), are optional materials not included in the purchase.
7. Conduct and Termination
Participants in live sessions shall treat other participants with professionalism and respect. RHI may terminate access, without refund, for violation of these terms, including sharing access credentials or redistributing materials.
8. Privacy
Our handling of your information is described in the Privacy Policy. Your agreement to these terms is recorded (email, date, and terms version) when you sign in.
9. General
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without giving effect to conflict of laws principles. If any provision is held unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect. RHI may update these terms prospectively; material changes will be versioned and you may be asked to re-accept. Questions and requests: legal@a.xpm.one.
Your use of uxrcourse.com is also governed by the RHI Website Terms of Use and Privacy Policy at experienceplus.ai, which cover general use of the Website and the handling of your personal information. These Course Terms are a separate and specific agreement governing the Course — its purchase, access, refunds, live sessions, and pilot participation — and control over any conflicting provision of the Website Terms of Use, including that document’s integration and “complete and exclusive agreement” language. The Website Terms of Use continue to apply to all matters these Course Terms do not address.
Dispute resolution. Disputes arising out of or relating to the Course or these Course Terms are subject to the dispute-resolution provisions of the RHI Website Terms of Use: binding arbitration administered by JAMS in California, conducted virtually, with class actions waived and claims brought within one year. Small claims court remains available for qualifying disputes. Nothing in this paragraph limits your rights under Section 3 (Refunds) or any right that cannot be waived under applicable law.
9A. Limitation of Liability and Indemnity
9A.1 To the maximum extent permitted by law, RHI's total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the Course, these terms, or your use of the Course materials will not exceed the amount you paid RHI in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim, or one hundred U.S. dollars ($100), whichever is greater.
9A.2 RHI will not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost business opportunities, lost data, or reputational harm, whether in contract, tort, or otherwise, even if advised of the possibility.
9A.3 You agree to indemnify and hold harmless RHI and Ryan Hanau from any third-party claim arising out of your conduct in completing the Course, including any research you conduct on other people (see Section 10.16), your handling of their personal information, and any breach of these terms.
9A.4 Formal legal notice to RHI must be sent in writing to Ryan Hanau, Inc., 1831 Poipu Rd, Apt 720, Koloa, HI 96756-9429. All other inquiries: legal@a.xpm.one or the contact form at uxrcourse.com/contact.
9A.5 Nothing in this Section limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, including liability for fraud, gross negligence, or willful misconduct.
10. Pilot Access Program
10.1 Scope. This Section applies to individuals RHI admits to a no-cost pilot cohort of the Course ("Pilot Participants"). Where this Section conflicts with Sections 1 through 9A, this Section controls, and only for Pilot Participants. Sections 4 through 9A otherwise apply in full.
10.2 Eligibility and admission. The pilot is open only to individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years old and who reside in the United States. By applying, you represent that both are true. RHI may decline or end participation if it has reason to believe otherwise. Participation is by application. Submitting the pilot sign-up form does not entitle you to participate and does not create any agreement between you and RHI. RHI selects participants at its sole discretion and will confirm admission by email. Your access, and these terms as applied to you, begin on that confirmation.
10.3 No fee and no obligation to purchase. Pilot access is provided at no charge. You will not be asked for payment information, and no fee becomes due at any point during or after the pilot. Your decision to purchase or not purchase the Course afterward has no bearing on your pilot participation, and RHI will not condition completion, feedback acceptance, or any acknowledgment on a purchase.
10.4 License. RHI grants you the personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license described in Section 1, limited to the term in Section 10.5. The "lifetime access" commitment in Section 1 applies to purchased access only and does not apply to pilot access.
10.5 Term, and what happens when your access ends. Your pilot access begins on the date of RHI's admission confirmation and ends automatically six (6) months from that date. RHI will state your end date in the admission email and will send a reminder at least fourteen (14) days before it. When that date passes, your access to the Course ends. RHI may extend an individual participant's access, or offer Pilot Participants a discount on a paid tier, at its sole discretion — but is under no obligation to do so, and no extension, discount, continued access, or renewal is promised or implied by your participation. RHI may also close the pilot as a whole before your end date under Section 10.12.
RHI will make your submitted assignments and capstone project available to you for download for thirty (30) days after your access ends. RHI is not obliged to retain them after that period, and you should keep your own copies.
10.6 Feedback is the consideration for access. In exchange for no-cost access, you agree to provide RHI with candid feedback on the Course. Specifically, you agree to make a good-faith effort to:
- respond to no more than two (2) check-in requests from RHI during your pilot term; and
- complete a closing conversation or survey of no more than fifteen (15) minutes at the end of your pilot term.
Feedback is qualitative and honest by design. Negative feedback is expressly welcome and will never be treated as a breach of these terms or as grounds for termination under Section 7 or Section 10.12.
10.7 License to your feedback. You grant RHI a perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable license to use, reproduce, modify, and incorporate your feedback into the Course, its curriculum, and related materials, without attribution, compensation, or any further obligation to you. Feedback you provide is not confidential to you and is not returned. For the avoidance of doubt, this Section grants RHI no rights in your coursework or capstone project, which remain yours under Section 5.
10.8 Attribution, testimonials, and disclosure. RHI will not publish your name, employer, likeness, or any identifiable quotation from your feedback without your separate, specific, written consent. RHI may describe pilot findings in aggregated or de-identified form without consent. If you separately choose to review, endorse, or recommend the Course publicly, you must disclose that you received free access, as required by the FTC's Endorsement Guides.
10.9 Pre-release materials, provided as is. Pilot materials are pre-release. Lessons, assignments, videos, audio, and the platform itself may be incomplete, contain errors, change substantially, or be withdrawn or replaced during the pilot. Access may be interrupted. Pilot materials are provided AS IS, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, availability, or uninterrupted access. The educational disclaimer in Section 6 applies to pilot access with equal force.
10.10 Confidentiality of unreleased materials. Pilot materials include content RHI has not published. You may not share, post, screenshot, stream, record, summarize for publication, or otherwise redistribute pilot materials or your credentials, in whole or in part, during the pilot or after it ends. This obligation survives the end of your participation. Nothing in this Section restricts you from publicly stating that you took part in the pilot, or from sharing your own coursework and capstone project.
10.11 Your information. The pilot sign-up form collects your name, email address, current occupation, self-described research experience, what you want from the pilot, and any optional comments you add. These responses are stored in RHI’s database, and RHI is notified when a new response is recorded. They are used solely to select participants, run the pilot, and improve the Course. RHI does not sell your responses and will not add you to the newsletter or any other marketing list unless you separately opt in. RHI does not share your responses with third parties except service providers that host or operate the Website and its systems, which process them only on RHI’s instructions and for no other purpose. You may request deletion of your sign-up responses at any time by emailing legal@a.xpm.one or via the contact form at uxrcourse.com/contact; RHI will comply within thirty (30) days, except where retention is required by law. Section 8 otherwise applies.
10.12 Withdrawal and termination. You may withdraw from the pilot at any time, for any reason and with no penalty, by emailing legal@a.xpm.one or via the contact form at uxrcourse.com/contact. You are under no obligation to complete the Course or the capstone. RHI may end your participation, or the pilot as a whole, at any time. Because no fee is paid, no refund arises in either case. Sections 5, 9A, 10.7, 10.10, and 10.16 survive the end of your participation.
10.13 Live sessions are discretionary. Pilot access does not include any guaranteed live, group, or one-to-one session. RHI may offer live sessions during the pilot at the instructor's sole discretion, in whatever number and format suits the cohort, and may add, reschedule, reduce, or cancel them at any time. No live session is promised by your admission to the pilot, and the absence of live sessions is not a breach of these terms. Where live sessions are offered, Section 4 applies except that the twelve (12) month expiry does not apply and any unused sessions lapse when your access ends under Section 10.5.
10.14 Recording. RHI may record live sessions for its own review and for improving the Course. RHI will tell you before any session is recorded and will not publish a recording, or any excerpt identifying you, without your separate written consent. You may ask to have your camera and microphone off, or to be excluded from a recording, at no penalty. You may not record any live session yourself, by any means, whether or not other participants consent.
10.15 Your coursework. Your assignments and capstone remain yours under Section 5. By submitting work to RHI for review, you grant RHI a limited, non-exclusive license to receive, store, review, annotate, and discuss that work with you and, where the work is submitted for peer review, with your cohort. RHI is under no obligation to review, retain, return, or preserve any work you submit beyond the download window in Section 10.5, and you should keep your own copies.
10.16 Research you conduct on other people. The Course requires you to recruit and study real people — through surveys, interviews, usability tests, and evaluations. You are solely responsible for that research and for the people who take part in it. You agree to:
- obtain each research participant's informed, voluntary consent before collecting any data from them, and tell them how their data will be used;
- comply with all applicable privacy, data protection, recording-consent, and research laws in your jurisdiction and theirs;
- obtain any permission required by your employer or by the owner of any product or system you study, and not disclose anyone's confidential or proprietary information to RHI or to your cohort; and
- not submit to RHI or share with your cohort any personal information identifying your research participants. Anonymize or pseudonymize your data before submitting or presenting it.
RHI is not a party to your research, does not supervise or approve it, provides no ethical or institutional review, and accepts no responsibility for it. Section 9A.3 applies.
10.17 Applicants who are not admitted. If RHI does not admit you to the pilot, these terms do not apply to you, RHI will not add you to any marketing list, and RHI will delete your sign-up responses within ninety (90) days.
10.18 United States only. The pilot is offered solely to US residents (Section 10.2) and is not directed to individuals in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or any other jurisdiction. RHI does not knowingly admit applicants outside the United States. If RHI learns that an admitted participant does not reside in the United States, RHI may end that participation under Section 10.12 and will delete their sign-up responses.
10.19 No credential. Completing the pilot does not confer any degree, certificate, credential, continuing-education unit, or academic credit, and carries no accreditation. Section 6 applies: the Course is offered independently and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the University of California.
10.20 No employment or partnership. Your participation and your feedback are voluntary and uncompensated. Nothing in this Section creates an employment, contractor, partnership, joint venture, or agency relationship between you and RHI, and you are not entitled to any payment, equity, revenue share, or other consideration beyond the access described here.
10.21 Acceptance. Because pilot admission does not run through checkout, RHI records your acceptance of these terms (email address, date, and terms version) either by your reply to the admission email or at first sign-in, whichever comes first. Section 9 governs changes to these terms.
